33 - The Cosmic Christ Part 4: Who is the Christ and What is His Relevance Today?

Humanity is facing many challenging and what seem to be insurmountably dangerous developments. The assassination of Benazir Bhutto is just one recent example. How sad that we still have to settle our differences by murder! The continuous death and hunger and devastation in all parts of the world continue in this age of plenty. On the one hand we have tremendous prosperity and extravagance, on the other hand, we have people dying from starvation and exposure. The lack of basic human rights and freedoms in many countries is beyond comprehension. The dictatorial regimes that continue to flourish and the disease and devastation in so many parts of the world do cause me to wonder: Where does Christ figure in humanity today?

As we enter the year 2008, I hope that there is heightened awareness of these problems and that more and more people use their positions and resources to alleviate some human suffering. I have met many people over the past years that do their part to help suffering human beings. Each person who is caring, loving, and does his or her part is a helper of the Christ mission.

What is that mission? Here is one articulation of the mission of Christ from The Teachings of Christ Volume 1: The Birth of Christ.

1. To destroy the glamors accumulated in the sphere of the earth and allow more light to penetrate to this planet.
2. To transmit to earth the Ray of Compassion so that humanity could grow, unite, cooperate, and create conditions in which unfoldment of the potentials of the soul and its blooming would be possible.
3. To give an example of achievement and show humanity what his destiny and highest task is — which is to be perfect.

No matter what are our religious and spiritual preferences, if we care about human life and human conditions, we are the helpers of God’s mission on earth. I understand Christ to be the head of the Hierarchy, the Church Invisible. Christ carries on the purpose of God on Earth. The Great Ones cannot do the work for us. It is up to us to do the work on this planet. We are able to receive inspirations and visions from the Great Ones, but we still have to do the work. We have intelligence and insight and the means to do the work. Loving men and women of all faiths, united in their love of humanity, can alleviate the suffering of human beings. The one needed element is the desire to help and to see a better life for all. Eventually, perhaps in another 100 years, this may actually happen. But it takes baby steps, one person at a time, one problem at a time, and by undying faith and hope for the future wellbeing of mankind. It is truly encouraging to see how many people all over the world, in all walks of life, already do this as part of their daily life activity.

In order to complete the series of Blogs on the Cosmic Christ, I offer here the last of the four-part series by including in this Blog some of my favorite definitions of the “Christ.”

At the end of this Blog, please find detailed references about these books and where you can find them.

I. Definitions of “Christ” from Christ The Avatar of Sacrificial Love: (p. 86)

1. The inner Christ, “The Hope of Glory” or the mystical Christ (also refereed to as the Solar Angel or Guardian Angel.
2. The historical Christ.
3. The Cosmic or mystic Christ.
4. The Christ, the Head of the Hierarchy [Church Invisible], used as a title for the office.
5. The Archetypal Man.
6. The term, “Christ Consciousness” which in esoteric literature refers to awareness on the Intuitional or Buddhic Plane.

II. From Violet Tweedale’s book, the Cosmic Christ:

“…the mighty Cosmic Lord Who came forth from the spiritual sun of the universe, Who has guided humanity from the beginning onwards. The seeker will find Him to be Alpha and Omega Which is and Which was and Which is to come.” (p. 18)

“Thus study, devotion and a keen desire to unveil the mystery of Jesus the Christ result in the discovery of the mighty Cosmic Being Who has always been at work in the world amongst all peoples.” (p. 21)

“The word “Christos” represents the collective aggregation of the many messengers who have been sent to earth to guide and instruct infant humanity.” (p. 23.)

“There is abundant evidence to show that always the One Being has overshadowed or ensouled the mighty Initiates of the past and has sent them to teach “The Word” which was from the beginning, though expressed under many different aspects and through many different forms.” (p. 23.)

“There has never been any division of the Godhead, though manifestations there have been in plurality. In the Godhead there is one-ness for everyone. Plurality of manifestation was given to suit the needs of the world.” (p. 23.)

“Initiate teachers who were sent to us established great doctrines that have swayed vast numbers of humanity for thousands of years up to the present day. They wait to be drawn into the fold of the Cosmic Christ, where they rightly belong; the fold He had in mind when He spoke of His ‘other sheep.’” (pp. 23-24.)

III. From the book Christ Avatar of Sacrificial Love pp. 12-13:

“One of them was a fiery Soul Who, for the first time in the history of the human race, entered into Enlightenment. He stood in the presence of that mysterious Being Who is called the Ancient of Days, Melchizedek, the One Initiator, or Sanat Kumara.

“Thus He opened a conscious line of communication between that great station of Power, Love, and Beauty and struggling humanity. He became a bridge, and in the stormy and dark oceans of the life of humanity the compass was found, the North Star was seen. Hope was spread in the hearts of the sons of men . . . and the Purpose of creation was sensed.”

“He passed through all human sufferings, and as He pressed forward for more light, for more love, the heavy clouds of human ignorance broke their thunder on His body and heart. . . . But He never gave up. He was running His marathon race upon the planet, and He decided never to stop at any cost but to press forward to the Good.

“As He traveled the path of pain, the path of sacrifice and service, the great flower of compassion flourished in His heart and eventually embraced the whole planet.

“Age after age, He reappeared among men, giving the same Teaching, opening the same Way, and expressing the same Beauty.”

“All those who responded through their life, service, and sacrifice gathered around Him, and the Center of Love grew and grew, becoming a fiery Magnet attracting the Cosmic Energies, the Cosmic Beauties.

“It is from this Center that all Saviors throughout the ages and in all countries went forth, taking with Them the message of Compassion, the message of Beauty, Service, Sacrifice, Simplicity, and Fearlessness.

“We are told that He is on the way back to the world of men to renew in our hearts a greater hope, a greater faith, and a greater love.”

If you wish to learn more about the various meanings of Christ, I recommend the following books:

1. The Teachings of Christ, Volume I, The Birth of Christ by Torkom Saraydarian. This book describes the many symbolic meaning of the process of birth. It presents the process of creation of the human soul and what its attributes are. The human soul is often referred to as the Christ within. The book also explains the inner and outer preparations for Christmas, being none other than the preparation for the birth of the real person. It explains how to keep the joy and life moving in your life throughout the year and not limit it to the extravagances of the Christmas season. You can find more information and a reprint of the introduction by clicking on the title above. The esoteric interpretations of the birth of Christ are sure to please some and to challenge some. It is a book to read if you like challenge in understanding the meanings behind Christ Teachings. This is available through TSG Foundation.

2. I like the way Violet Tweedale wrote about the Cosmic Christ. This book was first published in 1931 and you can still order it from Amazon.com . It is really worth reading for she presents a huge view of the various manifestations in the world of the Christ Teachings. She presents a comprehensive view of how the Cosmic Christ influenced every religious and spiritual movement in the world.

3. Torkom Saraydarian writes in Christ Avatar the Sacrificial Love about who is the Christ. This has a lot of information about the incarnation and life of Master Jesus as Christ overshadowed him. There are also many descriptions about the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus that are sure to be challenging to our traditional understanding of the Christian faith. Available through TSG Foundation.

4. You can also find reference to the mystery Teachings of Christ in the writings of Corinne Helene, especially the multi-volume discussions titled The New Age Bible Interpretation. These are beautiful explanations on the mystical meanings of the Old and New Testaments. Check Amazon.com for information.

5. Esoteric interpretations of Christ can also be found in H. P. Blavatsky’s Collected Writings. Search the Index and you will find many references to enlighten you from the Theosophical perspective. Check Theosophical Society website for information.

I wish you a very happy New Year in 2008. May it be filled with new inner growth and may your inner expansion include more of humanity.
